I have worked with Matrox in the past, a long time ago. This was the with Matrox Video Division (legacy DigSuite / Axio), Matrox Graphics was developing graphics cards. But times have changed, currently Matrox does much more than this.
The Matrox Maevex 6100 series 4k Enterprise Encoders got my attention after attending a series of Matrox webinars by Rob Moodey. I was surprised by the level of detail in these webinars. Especially the encoding, scaling and streaming process were explained extensively. It made me wonder if I would find a matching control level in the Maevex 6150, a Quad H.264 Encoder / Recorder.
The Maevex 6150 looks like an ordinary black box, but don’t be fooled by appearances. I tried to bring the box to live in this review, give you an idea what it can do and how I tested this.
Besides software based decoders (VLC) I used Brightsign Digital Signage players (LS424 and XT1144) as hardware decoders to test the Maevex.
In this review I will explain what the Maevex can do, how I tested it and give you my independent opinion. Having a trainer background, I tried to squeeze in some useful information about streaming as well. Enjoy and let me know what you think!
